Against Selfies

Each moment sloughs off the husk
of a self we will not recognize.
Instead, I want to ride time like a surfer,
disappear repeatedly and joyfully,
exchange my skin.
I want to look and listen until
I become transparent—
a prism for light to move through,
a valley where weather accumulates
and moves on.
Katia Zalkind is a Chicago-based poet and science writer. They hold a PhD in cognitive neuroscience and have never been able to choose between science and poetry.
