Today
by JONATHAN DOWER
It’s hot today.
The coffee machine whirs. Tall faucet rushes water
from the well. Ground Colombian beans fill the
room.
It’s December.
Fifty inch four K television sits idle, mirrors soft grey
walls. Comcast internet router blinks incessantly.
Suburban birds chirp outside.
I worked yesterday.
Cheap fifty dollar air purifier blows. Masterfully
painted black cabinets, close slow. Future fridge
reflects the sun that shines.
I work today.
Ice melts in a repurposed blender cup with no lid,
and no ball. Roku remote sits on a five dollar
throw blanket.
She didn’t know I work today.
The living room is silent,
only the death of convenience lives.
